Your Haiku Coach.

Write or improve your haiku, haibun, or tanka by working with leading translator and poet William J. Higginson.

If you're reading this page, chances are you already know of me as the co-author, with Penny Harter, of The Haiku Handbook: How to Write, Share, and Teach Haiku (“. . . the standard work in the field”—Booklist), or as author of The Haiku Seasons: Poetry of the Natural World (“. . . a very clear account of haiku's origins”—The Japan Times) or Haiku World: An International Poetry Almanac (“. . . an exceedingly valuable new asset”—Asahi Shinbun).

Let me work with you by e-mail, helping you generate your own ideas for writing haiku with simple, step-by-step instructions, or helping you revise and polish your work.

For example, a haiku that begins as an okay 5-7-5 poem like this:

A cold winter wind
on the rolling hills of night
frosty in starlight.

can become a really striking haiku like this:

a singing wind—
the hills roll away
frosty in starlight

My rates for haiku (and related forms such as haibun and tanka) are probably cheaper than you expect, and you may not need as many lessons as you think. Contact me today, and find out how you can join my select group of private students in places like Australia, California, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New Mexico. You can read my personal biography and list of representative publications by clicking here.

And my main web site is presently at http://haikai.home.att.net.
